Teachers have the important role in the life of this world. A teacher teaches the knowledge to the students with the hope that the knowledge will be embedded in the students. This job is really noble, especially if the thing that is taught is Islamic knowledge.
In Islam, it is not only taught about the Islamic tawheed knowledge, but it is also taught about how we can know what is right and wrong, good and bad. Because the role of a teacher is very important, then in Islam, teacher is very glorified.
A student must be able to be nice when meeting with the teacher. Because the pleasure of the teacher to the student affects the successful level of a student in studying the knowledge that is taught. Then how should the manners of studying towards teachers?
Check out below!
Respect the Teacher
Teacher is not only a person who teaches us knowledge, but also as the substitute of our parents in the study place. Then, we must respect the teacher as we respect people who are older than us. Some ways to respect the teacher in Islam are paying attention to what the teacher says without interrupting or cutting off the teacher’s words, being inferior and not testing the teacher with a lot of inappropriate questions. As it is stated in the verse below.
The companion of Abu Sa’id al-Khudri radhiallahu ‘anhu said,
كنا جلوساً في المسجد إذ خرج رسول الله فجلس إلينا فكأن على رؤوسنا الطير لا يتكلم أحد منا
“When we were sitting in the mosque, then the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam came out then he sat in front of us. Then as if there was a bird above our head. Neither of us talked.” (Hadith Bukhari)
Abu ‘Ubaid Al Qosim ibn Salam said, “I have never knocked one of my teachers’ house door, because Allah said,
وَلَوْ أَنَّهُمْ صَبَرُوا حَتَّى تَخْرُجَ إِلَيْهِمْ لَكَانَ خَيْرًا لَهُمْ وَاللَّهُ غَفُورٌ رَحِيمٌ
“If they were patient, until you came out to meet them, it would be better for them.” (QS. Al Hujurat: 5)
The Manners of Sitting
Generally, a student studies in sitting position. In the sitting position, there are also the manners that need to be noticed.
Shaykh Bakr Abu Zayd Rahimahullah in his book of Hilyah Tolibil Ilm said, “Use the best manners when you sit with your shaykh, use a good way in asking and listening to him.”
Shaykh Utsaimin commented on these words, “Sit with the civilized sitting, do not stretch the legs, also do not lean, especially when you are in the assembly.”
Ibnul Jamaah said, “A knowledge seeker must sit neatly, calmly, tawadhu’, eyes towards the teacher, not stretch the legs, not lean, also not lean with his hands, not laugh loudly, not sit on the higher place, also not have his back towards the teacher.”
From the verse above, it is known that there are the prohibitions of leaning in Islam when studying.
The Manners of Talking
Teacher is a person who has taught the goodness to the student. So, a student must be able to be nice to the teacher. Notice the ethics of talking in Islam to the parents, teachers and each other.
Abu Sa’id al-Khudri radhiallahu ‘anhu also explained,
كنا جلوساً في المسجد إذ خرج رسول الله فجلس إلينا فكأن على رؤوسنا الطير لا يتكلم أحد منا
“When we were sitting in the mosque, then the Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam came out then he sat in front of us. Then as if there was a bird above our head. Neither of us talked.” (Hadith Bukhari)
Those are the manners of studying towards teachers in Islam. Hopefully all of the readers can practice them and get a wisdom from them. As well as become a person who is always istiqomah in Islam. Aamiin.
