12 Virtues of Old Age in Islam

When hair has been white, step has been slow, sight has been blurred, hearing has been undefined, skin starts wrinkle, beautify and handsomeness have disappeared, many diseases start to arrive, that is the time of old age.

Allah Subahanhu Wa Ta’ala makes human weak, then grow up to be strong, handsome and beautiful. Among them, there are died when they are still kids, young or old. For those who are died in the old age will get weak condition back like the period of their children.

Even some of them are senile and they like children. Those are weak condition in the old age. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala mentions it in Surah Yasin verse 68 :

“And he to whom We grant long life We reverse in creation; so will they not understand?” (Q.S. Yasin : 68)

“Allah is the one who created you from weakness, then made after weakness strength, then made after strength weakness and white hair. He creates what He wills, and He is the Knowing, the Competent.” (Q.S. Ar Ruum : 54)

  1. Older and love more the world

From Abu Hurairah ra, he said that Rasulullah Shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

قَلْبُ الشَّيْخِ شَابٌّ عَلَى حُبِّ اثْنَتَيْنِ حُبِّ الْعَيْشِ وَالْمَالِ

“There is elderly person like a young man, he is love two things : love that live long and love treasure.” (Narrated by Muslim number 1046)

In other hadith, Rasulullah saw said,

“When human is older, two matters in himself will be younger. The first is greedy. The second, a wish to life longer in the world.”

  1. Multiply dhikr and deeds

Dhikr (remember Allah SWT) is one of noble worships. Dhikr majlis is very noble on the side of Allah Ta’ala and it has many noble virtues, such as it is a heaven park in the world.

عَنْ أَنَسِ بْنِ مَالِكٍ رَضِي اللَّهُ عَنْهُ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ إِذَا مَرَرْتُمْ بِرِيَاضِ الْجَنَّةِ فَارْتَعُواقَالُوا وَمَا رِيَاضُ الْجَنَّةِ قَالَ حِلَقُ الذِّكْرِ

 From Anas bin Malik r.a., that Rasulullah saw said,

“If you pass heaven parks, then stop happily.” The companions said, “What are heaven parks?” He answered, “Halaqah (groups) of dhikr.”

  1. Has reached perfect maturity

It is narrated, al-Khalil bin Ahmad al-Farahidi is a godly, clever, patience, humble, authoritative and honorable man. He said,

“The human who has perfect mind is if he has reached forty years old, where at that age, Allah Ta’ala delegates the Prophet Muhammad saw and the mind of human will be very pure at dawn.”

  1. Make it as the best days

When we hit old age, we should make it as the best days in our lives. As the word of Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala :

“When he reaches maturity and reaches [the age of] forty years, he says, “My Lord, enable me to be grateful for Your favor which You have bestowed upon me and upon my parents and to work righteousness of which You will approve and make righteous for me my offspring. Indeed, I have repented to You and indeed I am of the Muslims.” (Q.S. Al-Ahqaf : 15)

  1. Thankful upon the delight of Allah SWT

Imam al-Qurthubi rahimahullah in his tafsir said,

“Allah Ta’ala mentions someone who has reached forty years old, then indeed it has arrived for him to know delight of Allah Ta’ala that there are in his self and his parents, then he thankful it.”

  1. Thankful to the parents

When someone is forty years old, then he has responsibility in his family and society. So, sometimes his parents are forgotten. Rasulullah saw said,

“Someone loss, someone loss, someone loss who get his parents, one or all of them but he cannot enter to the Heaven (because of it).”

In other narration,

“But both of them cannot enter him into the Heaven.” (Narrated by Ahmad and others)

  1. Do not forget descendants

A Moslem must notice education and guide his descendants to be an obedient person to Allah Ta’ala. Syaikh as-Sa’id said in his tafsir,

“Indeed parents should have knowledge and deeds, it is included a good big cause for their children.”

  1. Repent

The forty years old must become starting point and repentance someone upon his sins during his life.

Because in this age, he has really felt many delight and he rarely thankful to Him. Then confession will flow from those who want to reflect his past period, so regret will be born, grow istighfar and repent to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

  1. Be not accepted reasons

Al-Khattabi said :

“Its meaning, people who are lengthened their age until fifty years old by Allah, will be not accepted their uzur/reasons again. Because the fifty years old is an age that near with death, then this is a chance to multiply repent, worship fervently, and get ready to meet Allah.” (Tafsir al-Qurthubi)

  1. Get happy and love

If someone has reached sixty years old in the state of Islam and faith, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will give happy and love to repent to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala and like to do good deeds. Because they will be back to Allah Ta’ala. If on the contrary, Allah will not give these rewards.

If you has reached seventy years old, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will love you. Even all of angels in the sky will love you too, on the condition, you always do all His commands and keep away from His prohibitions. You has also passed ages and get rewards above.

  1. Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will accept all good deeds

If someone has reached eighty years old, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala will accept all his good deeds, although he is not sincere, and Allah Ta’ala does not note his sins. All of good deeds that he did both for Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala or other human is assumed sincere by Him.

Because in this age, Allah Azza Wa Jalla accept his deeds, although he forgets. Angels who notes sins, does not sins again, while his rewards is always noted by the Angel.
