30 How to be Happy in Islam

The terms of happiness are different from one person to another. Some of them think that a lot of money brings happiness. Despite there are those who say that happiness is simple, that is a happy, peaceful, and happy mood, and there is no sadness that comes to it. Happiness is born from the heart. If there are several ways to be happy, in this article will discuss on how to be happy in Islam.

  1. Pleasure Of Allah:

Sometimes, we as a human would do anything for pleasing other. Unfortunately, if the others are not pleasing as we expected then it leads to the unhappiness. The only way that we have to please Allah by striving on the way of Allah and obey all of His commands and living in the Islamic way. Allah will promise to those who believe him the paradise and Garden of Adn but the greatest bliss is the Pleasure of Allah. According to Quran 9:71-72 (at Taubah):

“The believing men and women are allies of one another. They enjoin what is right (Al-Maruf) and forbid what is wrong (Al Mungkar) and establish prayer and give zakah and obey Allah and His Messenger. Those – Allah will have mercy upon them. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Wise. Allah has promised the believing men and believing women gardens beneath which rivers flow, wherein they abide eternally, and pleasant dwellings in gardens of perpetual residence; but approval from Allah is greater. It is that which is the great attainment.”

2. Show Gratitude

As the slave of Allah, we must be grateful for the blessings that Allah has given us to any number. Humans who are never grateful will always feel less even though it has been given more than Him because basically, humans have the nature of dissatisfaction if they have not got what they want. From there, Allah says that is poured into the Qur’an 14: 7 (Ibrahim):

“And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, ‘If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe”

From the above verse, Allah asserts that if someone is grateful, then He will increase the favor, despite it is contrary, He even will be given punishment. Being a thankful person will make a person happy because avoid unnecessary stress. Gratitude will bring someone happy no matter what.

3. Think Of Your Soul As Well

“True enrichment does not come through possesing a lot of wealth, but true enrichment is the enrichment of the soul” (Bukhari).

4. Don’t Compare

The major thing that brings unhappiness is when a person start comparing with other which is above (better) of him/ her. When we look for other who better from us, sometimes we tend to fret over the things instead of appreciating. For instance, if we see our neighbor buy a new car, so that we feel that it is about competition, that we lose because we can’t afford anew car before them.  The Prophet said in a hadith about the comparison:

“Look at those below you (the less fortune than you), and don’t look at those above you, because it is the better” (Muslim)

The Prophet suggest look and compare ourself with the below of you, then we will feel that how grateful you have a thing that they don’t have. This will make you such a grateful person.

5. Don’t Expect Too Much From Others

We often put much expectation in others in many aspects of our lives such as career, wealth, success, and happiness. It is, even more, the marriage. If all that has not been fulfilled, it is not even the happiness that we have, but also the disappointment. Many relationships are broken because it is very not suitable with our expectations. Of course, we work on our effort to reach what we expect for but asking Allah is recommended and always surrender to Allah whatever happened. According to hadith:

“O Allah, give me enough of what You have made lawful to suffice me from what You have made unlawful, and enrich me by Your bounty giving me independence from all other than You.” (Tirmidhi)

By asking and surrender to Allah, whatever the results it will not trigger our frustration and may even reduce the happiness. Quoted in Quran 29:60 (Al Ankabut):

“And how many a creature carries not its [own] provision. Allah provides for it and for you. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing”
