Islam arranges a procedure about dress up for men or women, because it is not only women who have aurat but men have also it. Men have an obligation as Muslim to take care their selves and their aurat from the view of others. This has stated clearly in Quran Surah Al-A’raf verse 26 which means :

“O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness – that s best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.” (Q.S Al-A’raf : 26)

For that, this article will explore how to dress up for men according to Islam.

  1. Obligate to Close Aurat

At the beginning, it has been explained that human both men or women have aurat, they obligate to close their aurat with using cover or clothes. Aurat that is not closed and taken care well will cause damages and sins for their selves or others.

In Islam, the aurat of men is parts of body from knee to navel. But if he is with a woman, he should cover his abdomen up to his neck or he can use a long sleeved or short sleeved. He must do it because if that part is exposed and seen by a woman, it can cause a slander and sin for both of them.

Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

Do not a man see the aurat of other men…. “ (Narrated by Muslim)

  1. Avoid Syuhrah Clothing (Sensational)

Syuhrah clothing is a cloth tha can invite the attention of many people because it has unusual type or shape, such as too fancy, too different or too shabby and tattered that the intention is deliberate to be famous and reap a sensation among society or an event.

The Messenger of Allah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Whoever wears syuhrah clothing, then Allah will dress him with the same cloth on the Day of Judgment. Then, in that cloth will be lit the fire of Hell.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud and Ibn Majah)

“Whoever leaves a cloth with the intention of tawadhu for Allah SWT, while he is able to wear it, the Allah will call him on the Day of Judgment in front of all beings, then he is commanded to choose faith jewelry that he wishes to wear.” (Narrated by Ahmad and Tirmidzi) [AdSense-B]

[AdSense-A] Isbal is a cloth that its length passes the ankle of human. In Islam, men are not allowed to use clothes that the length pass their ankle. Many hadith narrated this prohibition, start from hadith that is narrated by Ibn Abbas, Ibn Umar, Ibn Mas’ud, Abu Huraira, Anas, Abu Dzar and many more.

The Prophet Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said absolutely :

“Sarong that is propped under his ankle, his place is in the Hell.” (Narrated by Bukhari)

Besides that, he explained in the next hadith which means :

“Three kinds of people who on the Day of Judgment , Allah SWT will not talk to them, do not see them, do not purify them and for them a painful punishment.” Then he continued, “musbil is a person (isbal), mannaan (the person who reopen the gift), and the person who make his merchandise best seller with a perjury.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud)

The prohibition of Isbal clothes is not without reason, it is said that Isbal is haram and a big sin especially if it is followed by pride. About this matter, the Prophet Mohammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Be careful from Isbal, because indeed Isbal is a pride.” (Narrated by Ahmad and Abu Dawud, see Saheeh Abi Dawud)

The right usage of clothes (sarong or pants) for Muslim men is according to sunnah from the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam. It is around calves as it has narrated in the hadith that ‘Utsman bin ‘Affan radhiyallahu ‘anhu said :

“Sarong of the Prohet Muhammad shallallhu ‘alaihi wa sallam is up  in the middle of his calves.” (Narrated by Tirmidzi)

Then Ibn Umar radhiyallahu ‘anhuma said,

“Sarong of a believer is up in the middle of his calves.” (Narrated by Muslim)

Even the Messenger of Allah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam also gave his words related to this matter :

“The sarong of a believer is a little above the middle of his calves, then to the middle of calves, then up to the two ankles. So whoever is under his ankles, the he is in the Hell.” (Narrated by Ahmad and Abu ‘Awwaanah)
