Law of Blow Out Food in Islam

Islam is a perfect religion. Where every order has been arranged in such a way with its teachings covering all aspects of human life as well as the benefits of prostration and sunnah prayer and the ban of pregnant women according to Islam.

Starting from the rules of worship, eating, even to the defecation has been arranged clearly. The same thing was conveyed by Salman Al-Farisi radhiallahu ‘anhu to the disbeliever who said,

“Indeed your prophet has taught everything to the extent that there is a defect case.” Salman replied: “Yes, right….” (Hadit narrated by Muslim : 262)

From the above hadith it can be concluded that the teachings of Islam is very detailed. Even in Islam is also arranged multiple things that are considered as trivial such as how to relieve stress. Which among of them is the law of blowing food. Described in the following hadith that:

Hadith from Abu Qatadah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:

“If you drink, do not breathe in a glass, and when you defecate, do not touch the genitals with your right hand…” (Hadit narrated by Bukhari : 153)

From the above hadith, the meaning of breathe in a glass is also same as blowing a drink. Of course this will also applied in food. In this case blowing food is not taught by Rasulullah Muhammad SAW. Also read : how to have a pure heart in Islam

Law of Blowing Food in Islam

Although there is clearly no hadith that states the prohibition of blowing food, but the outline of both food and beverages are the same type. That is the same consumed by humans. So in this case, according to hadith associated with drink then it will also apply same for food and vice versa.

1. Prohibition of blowing food

Hadith from Ibn Abbas radhiyallahu ‘anhuma,

“The Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam forbide us to breath in glass of water or blowing the containt of glass.” (Hadith narrated by Ahmad : 1907, Turmudhi : 1888, and validated by Syuaib Al-Arnauth)

The above hadith clearly explains that it is not permissible to blow food or drink that is still in hot condition. The philosophy that can be used is how we can exercise patience through food.

Since waiting for the food to be cold also requires a good patience. So of course this prohibition of blowing food also has other benefits that can simultaneously train our patience. Also read : importance of charity in Ramadhan

2. It can contaminate food and drink

The prohibition of blowing food is also based on the fear that when we blow a food it will cause a dirt in our mouth transmited to food. Of course this can be harmful to human health.

You can imagine how many germs consisted in our mouth, then when we blow the food of course the germ and bacteria could possibly move into it. This is in accordance with the hadith of An-Nawawi where he said:

“The prohibition of breathing in the glass when drinking includes as adab or manner. Since it is feared will contaminated the drinking water or something that falls from the mouth or from the nose or something.” (Hadith narrated by Muslim : 3/160)

3. It mixed up the odor

In addition besides it might dirty or contaminated by germs another concerns that can not be excluded is the incidence of odor. In this case, a person who has bad breath if he blows the food then what will happen is the smell of food and bad breath become mixed.

Of course this is a bit disgusting and consequently can eliminate appetite. The same thing was also conveyed by Ibn al-Qoyim in the following hadith :

“Blowing a drink can cause the water to be exposed to the unpleasant smells of the blowing person. So it makes the water disgusting to drink. Especially when bad breath occurs. In conclusion, the breath of the person who blows will mix with the drink. That is why the Prophet sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam combines the prohibition of breathing in a glass by blowing glass contents.” (Hadith narrated by Zadul Ma’ad : 4/215)

4.  It is more blessing for a food that has been cold

Prohibition of eating or blowing hot food is also delivered in the following hadith from Asma bin Abu Bakr :

“Indeed he if he made bread of tsarid his container was covered until the heat lost then he said I heard Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said, “Surely the food that is not hot or became cold gain more blessing.” (Hadith narrated by Hakim : 7124)

In the hadith it is explained that, Rasulullah himself stated with empathically a food that is not hot has a blessing when in consumption. Of course by using these hadith guidelines, it is increasingly asserted that blowing hot food is not an Islamic teaching that is recommended. Also read : how to give up smoking – the danger and risk

5.  Enjoy your meal after cold

At the previous point it has been explained if the food that is not hot has a blessing in it or more blessings compared to the food that is still hot. In an alleged with a hadith of Albani that says:

“There is a valid narration from Abu Hurairah, he said “The food should not be enjoyed until the hot smoke is gone.”  (Hadith narrated by Al-Baihaqi)

This means that the above hadith confirms the suggestion to eat food when the heat is gone. What is meant by the heat gone here is gone by itself. Not because it is blown using the mouth or using a fan-like tool. Is not it more convenient to eat foods that have been cold, than eating a hot meal.

The Danger of Blowing Food According to Health Science

Did you know that Islamic teaching did not recommend to blow hot food or drink is also correlate with the health sciences. Where there is a fact that blowing hot food has a negative impact on the body. In one study, blowing food turned out to be a risk of transmitted contagious diseases.

Imagine if you have tuberculosis or flu. When you blow the food of course there is a transfer of germs within the body to transmit to food. Then imagine what happens when the germ returns to your body. [AdSense-C]

In addition, when blowing food then our mouth will release CO2 or carbon dioxide. The reaction between carbon dioxide and water (H20) will form a Carbonate Acid or carbonic acid compound. This carbonate compound is acidic, so it could give negative impact to health. But this is still a debate since this reaction will occur at high temperatures and pressures. However, in addition to the above matter there are still amazing facts about the prohibition of blowing food or hot drinks. That is, another reason for not blowing our food is actually the main problem is not on water itself but on the components that containt by the water.

In water if it contains lime tohor (CaO) when blown by human breath, reacts with CO2 in the breath, will become limestone (CaCO3) and this limestone is one of the most common kidney stones.

That is, 5 laws of blowing food in Islam and its dangers to our health. Indeed Islam is a perfect teaching, every teaching and its prohibitions can be proven clearly even through modern science like the science of medicine. Indeed Allah SWT has created everything with its purpose including also the purpose of human creation, the process of human creation, the nature of human creation and human concept in Islam. As the Word of Allah SWT :

“….this day I have perfected for you your religion and completed My favor upon you and have approved for you Islam as religion….” (QS. Al-Maidah : 3)
