Law of Using Contraceptive Implant in Islam – A Holistic Explanation

Birth control is one of the newest innovation in health that is very useful for marriage couples. It is required so that couples can plan how many children they would have as well as keeping safe age gap. Islam is not against this, so that the contraceptive usage in Muslim women is not prohibited.

There are various kind of contraception, one of them is implant. Contraceptive implants is done by inserting a small, flexible rod under the skin of the inner upper arm. The contraceptive works by releasing progestogen hormones so that it can prevent pregnancy up to three years.

  1. Using Contraceptive Implant is Not Prohibited in Islam

“The Prophet (peace be upon him) forbade ῾Uthmān ibn Math῾ūn radiallahu anhu from abstaining from marriage.  “If he had allowed him, we would have castrated ourselves.” (Bukhari)

Contraceptive implants is arguably the safest birth control method for modern couples. It’s very simple and efficient as it doesn’t require monthly shots or consuming pill every night.   • It’s highly effective to prevent pregnancy.

Disadvantage of Contraceptive Implant

Not only the benefits, Muslim women should also aware of the possible disadvantage upon using the contraceptive implant.

  • Bleeding is the most common side effects. It can be irregular light bleeding, which can be either prolonged or frequent. For some women, the bleeding could be heavy as well. This problem can be resolved by consulting with the doctor.
  • This methods doesn’t protect women from STIs (sexually transmitted disease).
  • As it was put under the arm, some women may experience bruise on it.
  • To insert and remove it, minor procedure is required.

Other than what are mentioned above, contraceptive implant may cause minor side effects like headaches, breast tenderness, onset of acne, and mood changes.

Who to Use the Implants

Before using the implants, ask the doctor to take a look at your medication history so it can be decided whether implant is the best option for you or not. For the record, breastfeeding mom is safe to use the implants.

However, there are certain conditions in which women can’t use the implant:

  • Having a history of breast cancer.
  • Experienced vaginal bleeding with unknown cause (doctor should investigate this case).
  • Under certain medication which may reduce the effectiveness of the implant.
