13 Obligations of a Wife in Islam Must Know

In a Moslem household, both husband and wife have their own duty, rights and obligations one another such as the obligation of husband as a leader in his family, so his duty are keeping, protecting and providing his wife and his children.

While the obligation of wife is also very important and it is not forgotten by every Moslem women as a housewife.

A wife is created to put husband’s mind at ease. As it is explained in the Al-Qur’an Surah Ar-Ruum verse 21, which reads :

“And of His signs is that He created for you from yourselves mates that you may find tranquillity in them; and He placed between you affection and mercy. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought.” (Q.S. Ar-Rum : 21)

  1. Obey with her husband

The first obligation of a wife is obeying her husband. As long as his commands are in the way of Shari’a, a wife must obey him. If we obey to our husband, then we will entered into the Heaven by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.

It is explained in the shaheeh hadith of Ibn Hibban, from Abu Hurairah .a. that the Prophet Muhammad saw said :

“If a woman do the five daily prayers, fast in its month, keeping her private, then He will enter her into the Heaven from any door as she want. “ (Narrated by Hibban)

  1. Become a vice husband

In the household, a husband is the leader and a wife is a vice husband. She have to arrange, protect and be responsible about the honor, treasure and everything in the household. When her husband is not at home, she must put herself as a vice husband.

  1. Devote to husband

A wife has to devote to her husband, such as she always obey his commands, care her husband and  her children, manage the household seriously, and take care everything that have been mandated to her.

The Prophet Muhammad saw said :

“And a woman is a responsible person in the household of her husband, and she will be asked her responsibility.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim).

Besides that, there is another shaheeh hadith that Rasulullah saw said :  [AdSense-B]

“If I may command someone to bow down to others, then I will command a wife to bow down to her husband, because Allah has set the right of husbands upon their wives.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud and Tirmidzi)

  1. Take care herself when there is no husband

When there is no husband at home, a wife must take care herself. As it is explained in the Al-Qur’an, which reads :

“… so righteous women are devoutly obedient, guarding in [the husband’s] absence what Allah would have them guard…” (Q.S. An Nisaa’ : 34)

  1. Do not go without husband’s permission

As a wife, we have to get a permission if we want to do something or go to do our business outside the house. If our husband do not allowed, we do not go to anywhere.

Similarly, a wife who want to work, she must get a permission from her husband first. Because in Islam, if a wife go out from house without a permission from her husband, then it is a form of wife’s disobedience to her husband.

  1. Avoid the anger of husband and seek the willingness of husband

The willingness husband is a ticket for a wife to get happiness in the Hereafter and get heaven. Because of that, a wife must try to get the willingness of husband. But one thing that do not forget as a wife, we should avoid the anger of husband, too.

Because it does not only break the effort to get the willingness of husband, but also it can threaten the homes intact.

  1. Dress up to make husband happy

“The best wife is the one who pleasant looks if you (husband) see her, obey if you command her, and take care herself and your treasure when you go.” (Narrated by ath-Thabrani)

  1. Do not enter others into your house without husband’s permission

Never enter someone into your house without husband’s permission. Because husband is a head of household, so the command of husband must be obeyed by his wife and a wife must ask a permission in all things. [AdSense-C]

It has been explained in the shaheeh hadith of Muslim, that Rasulullah saw said :

“The right of husband upon them (wives) is those do not enter nobody who you do not like (allow) to your house. If they do it, then beat then with a beating that does not cause a mark.” (Narrated by Muslim, number 1218)

  1. Do not fast without the permission of husband

Do not do sunnah fasting without husband’s permission. Although that sunnah fasting is a worship, but if a wife do it without husband’s permission, then she has neglected the right of husband that become an obligation of wife. The Prophet Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“No halal for wife do sunnah fasting when her husband at home, except with husband permission.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

  1. Obey your husband while you are in bed

As we know, the fulfillment of biological needs is one of worships and sunnah from Rasulullah saw. If you are healthy and you are not having menstruation, then a wife and a husband must fulfill biological needs each other.

There is a shaheeh hadith of Bukhari and Muslim, from Abu Hurairah r.a. that Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“If a husband invite his wife to the bed, then the wife does not fulfill him, then angel will damn her until the time of dawn.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

  1. Follow husband’s residence

A wife has an obligation to follow husband’s residence. But if that environment can break akhlaq or it is not safe from the aspect of building and safety, then a wife has a right to refuse it.

  1. Do shadaqah with husband’s permission

From Abu Umamah Al-Bahili, he said, “I heard Rasululllah saw said :

“A wife must not spend shadaqah from her house without husband permission.”

The companions asked :

“O Rasulullah, how about food?” His said “that food is the best of our treasure.” (Narrated by Ibn Majah)

  1. Take care husband’s children

A wide must take care husband’s children, both they are your biological children or your stepchildren. Because the obligation of taking care husband’s children is a part of wife’s obligation to devote to her husband.
