13 Virtues of Teaching in Islam and Its Proposition

Demanding knowledge is the duty of every Muslim. Even Islam also obliges to always practice and redistribute the knowledge that has been obtained. There are many benefits and virtues of teaching in Islam, here are some of them:

  1. Become the Best Person

Imam Al-Bukhari narrated a hadith from Hajjaj bin Minhal from Syu’bah from Alqamah bin Martsad from Sa’ad bin Ubaidah from Abu Abdirrahman As-Sulami from Uthman bin Affan Radhiyallahu Anhu, that the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said,

خَيْرُكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ.

“The best of you are people who study the Qur’an and teach it.”

The Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said,

إِنَّ أَفْضَلَكُمْ مَنْ تَعَلَّمَ الْقُرْآنَ وَعَلَّمَهُ.

“Surely the most important people among you are those who study the Qur’an and teach it.”

Abdul Humaidi Al-Hamani, said: “I asked Sufyan Ath-Thauri, which one do you prefer, the person who fights or the person who reads the Qur’an?” Sufyan replied: “Reading the Qur’an. Because the Prophet said, the best person among you is someone who studies the Qur’an and teaches it.” (Also read: 12 Ways on How Quran Controlling Your Brain and Make the Quran a Habit).

  1. Become a Special Person

The Apostle said, “You cannot be jealous, except to two like people: namely the man who was given Allah knowledge of the Qur’an and practiced throughout the night and day; and the man who was blessed with Allah’s treasure, then he spent it all night and day.” (Bukhari & Muslim history)

  1. Raise the Degree of Parents

The Apostle said, “Whoever reads the Qur’an and practices its contents, Allah puts on his parents on the Day of Judgment a crown whose rays are better than sunlight in homes in the world. Then, how do you respond to the person who practices this.” (History of Abu Dawud) (Also read: 12 Proper Etiquettes of Reading The Holy Quran).

  1. Get Reward

From Abu Masud Uqbah bin Amir Al Ansari Radhiyallahu ‘Anhu, he said that the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said,

مَنْ دَلَّ عَلَى خَيْرٍ فَلَهُ مِثْلُ أَجْرِ فَاعِلِهِ

“Whoever points to the good, then he will get a reward like the reward of the person who did it.” (Narrated by Muslim no. 1893).

From Abu Hurairah, the Prophet Sallallaahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said,

“Whoever becomes a pioneer of good deeds then is practiced by people afterward, then it will be recorded for him the rewards such as the rewards of those who follow him and in no way will reduce the rewards they receive. On the contrary, whoever becomes the pioneer of an ugliness practice then is practiced by the person afterward; it will be recorded for him a sin such as the sin of the person who follows it, without reducing his sin in the slightest.” (Narrated by Muslim no. 1017)

“Anyone who studies one chapter from a science and then teaches it to others, then for him is given the same reward as seventy siddiq people.” (Narrated by Imam Abu Dawud, Imam at-Tirmidhi, Ibn Majah, Ibn Hibban, and Imam al -Hakim in his book Shaḥī kitab, from the hadith of Abu Hurairah ra Imam at-Tirmidhi commented, that this historical status is ḥasan)

  1. Earn God’s Love

Rasulullah once said to his companions: “May Allah’s love always be devoted to my successors (the caliphs).” One of his companions asked: “Who are your successors, O Messenger of Allah?” He replied: “Those who revive my Sunnah and teach it to servants of God.” (Narrated by Ibn ‘Abdil-Barr in al-‘Ilm, also by al-Harwi in Dzamm-ul-Kalām, from al-Hasan’s hadith – there is an opinion which states that al-Hasan meant Ibn ‘Ali, and there is also an opinion that says al-Hasan is referred to as Ibn Yassar al-Bashri – on a mursal basis)
