Prohibition of Raising Dogs in Islam – Laws

Bismillahirrahmanirrahim.

Human has a fitra to loves beautiful, funny and interesting things. One of that things is happy to take care pets. Cat, rabbit, fish, hamster and dog are some animals that were often taken care by human. But as we know, Moslem is prohibited to take care dog because it is one of unclean animals or it is haram. We are prohibited to contact its saliva and its dirt.

So, How must we do if that dog is taken care and assigned as animal which has to guard something? Moreover for people who live at prone areas, they have cattle and something like that? What is the law of it in Islam?

People who have not understood about this law, they often adjudicate Moslem who prohibited to take care dog. They said that Dogs is a Creation of Allah S.W.T. If you prohibited someone to take care it as pet, it is meant that you hate Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’Ala.

Besides that, they ask why Allah create dogs if human was prohibited to near them or take care them? Whereas, Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has His own aim when he created something. No one of His creations in this world are wasted. Because of that, this time we will explore about the prohibition of raising dogs in Islam that have been come from reliable sources.

All of Ulama have agreed to prohibition Moslem to have dogs, except if they have a purpose of three special purposes that were assigned. That special purposes are :

  1. It is used for hunting
  2. It is used for watching animals
  3. It is used for watching the fields

That thing is explained in hadith below :

From Abu Hurairah, from The Prophet shallallhu ‘alaihi wa salam, he said,

He who kept a dog which is neither meant for hunting nor for watching the animals nor for watching the fields would lose two qirat every day out of his reward. (Muslim no. 1575)

The meaning of one qirath, based on ulama is as big as Mount Uhud. The qiraat is an amount that is known by Allah, may He be exalted, it is meant that some of the reward for a person’s good deeds will be deducted.

In the other history, it said that :

From Ibn ‘Umar, from The Prophet shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said,

He who kept a dog other than one meant for hunting or for watching the herd lost out of his deeds (equal to) two qirat every day. (Bukhari no 5480 and Muslin no 1574)

[AdSense-B] Although there is Malikiyah ulama who was thanked that a dog may be useful for another purpose besides that three purposes. But the most of ulama agreed that utilization of dogs beside that three purposes in hadith, is prohibited. Even, based on the strongest opinion, Moslem is prohibited to use a dog as house keeper. So, it will be better if we were careful and not using or raising a dog except we have one of three purposes that have been explained in hadith above.

The Risks of Moslem If He Raising a Dog

Although, there is a clear law, many Moslem are raising a dog for many reasons. Whereas, That law has said risks of it, if they wanted to still raise a dog. That risk is his reward will be less as big as Mount Uhud every days. This thing has been explained in hadith above.

[AdSense-A] Have you been sure that our rewards were bigger than Mount Uhud? Until you consent to lose your rewards every days, just for a dog. Even, another hadith said that lost rewards is twice of Mount Uhud, every days. Have you still felt nothing?

Because of that, based on Syaikh Muhammad bin Sholeh Al Utsaimin, the law of raising a dog is haram, and it includes as big sin. Except, that dog is useful for hunting, watching the fields and animals.

But, there is a difference opinion between ulama about raising a dog, if that dog were useful for taking care house, moreover a house which was in the forest or another prone areas. There is ulama who allowed it because their reasons are safety and necessity. There is ulama who was absolute to not allow it.

Based on a hadith from Ibn Maajah (3640), narrated from ‘Ali ibn Abi Thaalib (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:

The angels do not enter a house in which there is a dog or an image.” Classed as shaheeh by al-Albaani in Saheeh Ibn Maajah.

So, what must we do to react it? Our act as Moslem is choosing to be more carefull. We are better to avoid prohibitions from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala through hadith as mentioned earlier. Business about alerting or anything else, we should believe with Allah S.W.T and do ikhtiar before we hire a dog. We have to do that or we will lose many rewards that it is not necessarily overflow. Wallahu’alam.

The ulama have difference opinion about the report which speak of one qiraat being deducted and those which speak of two qiraats being deducted. It was said that two qiraats will be deducted if the dogs is more harmful and one qiraat will be deducted if it is less so.

And it was said that as first the Prophet (peace and blessing of Allah be upon him) said that one qiraat would be deducted, then the punishment was increased after that, so he said that two qiraat would be deducted in order to put people off from keeping dogs even more.

Thus this article about prohibition of raising dogs in Islam. Hope as Moslem, we will be better than before. And we always be His side forever.
