Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said:

“Indeed every charity deeds depends on his intention and indeed everyone will get results according to his intentions.” (Narrated by Bukhari and Muslim)

According to the above hadith, that every charity or deeds are valued as worship or not in the side of Allah SWT depends on the intention when doing that charity or deeds itself.

Yawning based on scientist can help someone aware that there is something wrong with his body, it also give him  a sudden aware to entering a lot of oxygen to his brain, cause yawning is one of a sign that our brain lack of oxygen and it could make people less concentrate. In science when the blood pressure going low then it could make the blood pumped to the heart is reduced, then it make the blood pressure became lower.

As the impact of that is our heart or brain will lack of oxygen supply in blood and make someone became more often to yawn, feeling lazy, dizzy, or even they are getting tired moreover sleepy. The matter of yawning sounds trivial, but as explained before it is not that simple. And do you know the law of yawning during prayer in Islam?

Yawning During Prayer in Islam

Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam is a good and perfect example for his people, whether in the big or small or trivial matters. And he always gives a good example for his people in doing everything, including in the yawning matter.

The Muslims may often forget or deliberately not close their mouths while yawning, leaving their mouths wide open without being covered with hands. Though it is not good, and trivial things like yawning can actually be one way to increase our faith and piety to Allah as his servant.

In the Islamic source of shari’a there is a hadith from Rasulullah who discusses the yawning matter, and Rasulullah sallallaahu ‘alaihi wa sallam himself has taught his people to shut their mouths while yawning and do wide open when yawning. See also : how to gain beauty in Islam

Narrated by Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“Yawning is from the satan, therefore if one of you yawn, let him restrain it as much as possible.” (Narrated by Muslim)

In the above hadith explained, that if someone wants to yawn, it is suggested or recommended that he close his mouth as much as possible. Or they can cover their mouths with palms when yawning. And it’s even better, when someone yawns he closes his mouth with his left hand, because yawning is one of the bad deeds.

Indeed the matter of yawn is one of the deed most hated by Allah SWT, as narrated in the below hadith :

From Abu Hurairah radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihiwa sallam said :

“Indeed Allah loves sneezing and hate yawning. So if a person sneezes then let him praise Allah (by saying alhamdulillah). And it is a obligation for them (every Muslim) hear it to pray for it. As for yawning, it is coming from the satan. Let every Muslim try to restrain it as much as possible, and when he makes a sound ‘ha’, then the satan laughs at him that time. (Narrated by Bukhari)

In the above law is said, that Allah likes sneezing and hate yawning. When someone sneezes then let him praise Allah as a manifestation of one of the ways to be grateful for the blessings of Allah SWT. And Allah hates the act of yawn since it comes from the satan.

Yawning is an activity that could make people became lazy because they feel sleepy, so it is feared could make someone lazy to perform worship and not perform it even leave the worship. See also : how to improve health in Islam

From Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri radhiyallahu ‘anhu, he said, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa sallam said :

“If one of you yawning, let him keep his mout with his hand, since satan trying to go in.” (Narrated by Muslim)

From the few reviews above we can conclude, that yawning during prayer in Islam is allowed, but if possible that it will be better if we hold or restrain it.

When praying and someone yawning, it would be nice that he stops the prayer reading, and continue reading it again after he finished yawning, because if he continue it that it is feared that the person will forget the reading of prayer or the pronunciation of the prayer is not true. So, it would be better if the reading of his prayer be stopped first when yawning.

Not only that, when a person yawning during prayer, then do not show his teeth or open up his mouth. Moreover, to cause the sound of ‘ha’, it will invite the laughter of the demons or satan. See also : importance of breakfast in Islam

As a good Muslim, it would be nice if we follow what has been taught and clearly stated in the basis of Islamic law, and make the example of the Prophet Muhammad as our role model in every behavior and attitude. And let us as Muslims always improve morals and behavior as a manifestation and proof of our obedience and piety to Allah SWT.
