Sometimes, we hear adzan when we fall into deep sleep, we have lunch, or we are on the way to go home. Islam teaches some good deeds (sunnah) when we hear adzan.
We can do those sunnah to get rewards from Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. So, what are those sunnah? Now, let see the complete explanation below :

Those good deeds are narrated by Ibnul Qayyim. There are five good deeds when we hear adzan, such as :
- Say what Muadzin says
Replying or answering adzan is sunnah. When we hear the lafadz of adzan one by one, we should say the same lafadz. Except the lafadz of calling prayers and victory. Where we can reply it with lafadz ‘la haula walla Quwwata illa billah.’
As it is showed in the hadith of Umar Ibnul Khaththab z. He said: Rasulullah said :
“If muadzin says, “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar”, then one of you says, “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar.” Then muadzin says, “Asyhadu An Laa Ilaaha Illallah”, then it is said, “Asyhadu An Laa Ilaaha Illallah.” After that muadzin says, “Asyhadu Anna Muhammadan Rasulullah”, then it is answered, “Asyhadu Anna Muhammadan Rasulullah.
” When muadzin says, “Hayya ‘Alash Shalah”, then it is said, “La Haula wala Quwwata illa billah.” When muadzin says, “Hayya ‘Alal Falah”, then it is said, “La Haula wala Quwwata illa billah.” Then muadzin says, “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar”,
then the listener says, “Allahu Akbar Allahu Akbar.” In the end muadzin says, “La Ilaaha illallah”, he also says, “La Ilaaha illallah” If someone who answer this adzan says it confidently, he must enter to the Heaven.” (Narrated by Muslim number 848)
- Read Salawat for the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam
The second good deed is we should read Salawat for the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam. It is Allahuma Shalli ‘ala Muhammad. Or we can also read salawat Ibrahimiyyah that we usually read in tasyahud.

- Ask Wasilah for the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam
As it is mentioned in the hadith of Jabir bin ‘Abdillah, which reads :
Allahumma robba hadzihid da’watit taammah wash sholatil qoo-imah, aati Muhammadanil wasilata wal fadhilah, wab’atshu maqoomam mahmuuda alladzi wa ‘adtah
That dua is a form of our wish to the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam. Because Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala has given wasilah and virtues to him. [AdSense-B]
- Read Shahada
Read the sentence of shahada, then continue with Asyhadu alla ilaha illallah wahdahu laa syarika lah wa anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh, radhitu billahi robbaa wa bi muhammadin rosulaa wa bil islami diinaa,. This is mentioned in the hadith of Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqash.
- Offer prayers what we want
[AdSense-A] Hearing adzan is one of best times to offer our prayers. Because of that, we should offer our prayers what we want in this time. So, our prayers will be granted by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala soon.

Dalil About The Good Deeds of Hearing Adzan
It has been mentioned in the hadith of ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr bin Al ‘Ash, he said that he heard the Prophet Muhammad Shallallahu ‘Alaihi Wasallam said
“If you hear muadzin, then say what he said. Then say Salawat to me. Because whoever say Salawat to me, then Allah will say salawat for him (give forgiveness for him) as ten times.
Then ask wasilah to Allah for me. Because that wasilah is a place in the heaven where it is only for Allah’s servant, I hope that I get it. Whoever ask wasilah for me like that, he will get my intercession.” (Narrated by Muslim number 384)
Then, in the matter of asking wasilah for the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam is mentioned in the hadith of Jabir bin Abdillah, Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wa allam said, :
“Whoever say after hearing adzan ‘allahumma robba hadzihid da’watit taamah wash sholatil qoo-imah, aati Muhammadanil wasilata wal fadhilah, wab ‘atshu maqoomam mahmuuda alladzi wa ‘adtah’
[O Allah, Rabb who has this perfect da’wah (tauhid da’wah), prayers that are established, give to Muhammad a wasilah (the highest position), and fadilah (another noble positions). And rise him, so he is in praiseworthy maqom (position) that You has promised to him], then he will get my intercession later.” (Narrated by Bukhari number 614)
Then, from Sa’ad bin Abi Waqqash, from the Prophet Muhammad shallallahu ‘aiaihi wasalla said,
“Whoever say after hearing adzan : Asyhadu alla ilaha illallah wahdahu laa syarika lah wa anna muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh, radhitu billahi robbaa wa bi muhammadin rosulaa wa bil islam diinaa (which means : I confess that there is no God but Allah Almighty, there is no ally for Him, and I confess that the Prophet Muhammad is the servant and Messenger of Allah, I am rida as my Rabb, Muhammad as the Messenger of Allah and Islam as my religion), then his sins will be forgiven.” (Narrated by Muslim number 386)
From ‘Abdullah bin ‘Amr that someone has said, “O Rasulullah, indeed muadzin is often superior from us in the matter of good deed’s rewards.”
Rasulullah shallallahu ‘alaihi wasallam said,
“Say as it is mentioned by a muadzin. Then if it has finished adzan, pray, then it will be granted.” (Narrated by Abu Daud number 524 and Ahmad 2 : 172. Al Hafizh Abu Thohir said that this hadith hasan). Which means, a prayer after adzan is a prayer that will be granted by Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala.
After we know five good deeds above, Ibnul Qayyim said, “These are five good deeds that can be done a day and a night. Remember that someone who can keep it is only as saabiquun, he is anxiously in the goodness.” (Jalaa-ul Afham, page 333)
Thus the explanation about sunnah when hearing adzan. Hopefully, after we know these good deeds, we can often do it and increase our faith to Allah Subhanahu Wa Ta’ala. Aamiin ya Rabbal A’alamin.
