Hadith is a collection of stories/reportage of the entire behavior of the Prophet Muhammad in terms of giving a role model to his friends and surroundings with regard to his duty as a messenger of the Qur’an that is realized in amaliyah in real life. So the book of hadith is not an essay of a scholar in the past, but it is a report about the actions of the Prophet Muhammad SAW either in the form of speech or deed reported by his friends who see the life of the Prophet directly then the report is shared continuously like passing to the next generation.
All Muslims have agreed that the hadith is one source of Islamic teachings. The hadith has a second position after the Qur’an. The necessity of following the hadith for Muslims both in the form of orders and prohibitions, as well as the obligation to follow the Qur’an.
“(He) who obeys the Messenger then surely he obeyed Allah, and whoever turns away – then not We (have) sent you over them (as) a guardian.” (An-Nisa 4:80)
“And whatever gives you the Messenger, take it and whatever he forbids you from it, refrain. And fear Allah. Indeed, Allah (is) severe (in) penalty.” (A-Hashr 59:7)
“O you who believe[d]! Obey Allah and obey the Messenger and those having authority among you. Then if you disagree in anything, refer it to Allah and the Messenger, if you believe in Allah and the Day [the] Last. That (is) best and more suitable (for final) determination.” (An-Nisa 4:59)
Here is presented the importance of hadith in Islam.
1. Establish and strengthen the laws prescribed by the Qur’an
So in this case both together to be a source of law. For example, Allah in the Qur’an forbade to testify falsely in his word Q.S Al-Hajj verse 30 which means “And turn away the words of lies.” Then the Prophet with his Hadith reinforces: “Pay attention! I will declare to you the greatest of sins! “We replied:” All right, O Messenger of God. “He continued, his sabdah:” (1) Mushrik to Allah, (2) Hurt both parents. “At that time the Prophet was leaning, suddenly sat saying again:” Watch out! Said (testified) false.” (HR Bukhari – Muslim)
So, the Qur’an tells the forbidden one in the general. Then, the hadith perfects it with the description and the detail.

2. Giving details and interpretations of the verses of the Qur’an that are still Mujmal
There is something in the Qur’an that is not written in details so we need to understand it by some ways. The hadith is one of the ways to know more about it so we must read the hadith after reading the Qur’an. In addition, the hadith gives Taqyid (requirements) verses of the Qur’an are still explained in general.
For example, the command to do the prayer, pay zakat and perform the pilgrimage in the Qur’an is not explained the number of raka’at and how to perform the prayer, not specified the nisab of zakat and not presented the ways to perform the pilgrimage. However, they have been explained in detail and interpreted as clearly as Al-Hadith.

3. Setting Problems Not Explained by the Qur’an
The position of the Hadith in the establishment of a new law not set by the Qur’an shows that the Hadith is a source of Islamic law. The hadith is also in establishing the law of self-standing because it sometimes carries a law not mentioned in the Qur’an, such as giving an inheritance to a grandmother (jaddah), where the Prophet SAW gives one-sixth of the treasure of the deceased. Thus the function of the Hadith is a source of law in human life to obtain the happiness of the world and the hereafter.

4. Set an example
Prophet SAW’s duty is providing role models to his people, while his people must imitate and do those examples. The model of the Prophet (SAW) is in the form of words, deeds, even his character or character. All these elements are part of what is called the Hadith of Nabawi.
Therefore, according to this verse, a Muslim is unlikely to obtain Allah’s approval without imitating the behavior of the Prophet. Or in other words, because the Prophet’s exemplary behavior is a Hadith, then a Muslim will not be pleased with Allah if he does not imitate the Hadith in his behavior.
“Certainly, is for you in (the) Messenger (of) Allah an excellent example for (one) who has hope (in) Allah and the Day the Last, and remembers Allah much.” (Al-Ahzab 33:21)

5. The Prophet must be obeyed
The presence of the Prophet (s) is not merely a ‘transmitter’ of Allah’s teachings, where his advice and suggestions are left to evaporate in the air without any obedience from his people. One will not be called a believer when he does not apply the teachings of Allah in his daily life. When the Prophet was still alive, the teachings of God were reflected in his daily life. While after his death, the teachings of Allah are reflected in the hadith he left behind. Therefore, a Muslim besides being sued to be loyal to Allah, he is also prosecuted loyal to His Apostle.
“O you who believe! Obey Allah and His Messenger. And (do) not turn away from while you hear.” (Al-Anfal 8:20)
