1 Muharram is the day of the turn of the year in the Hijri calendar, or also called the new year of Islam. In month Muharram, there are so many virtues which is very unfortunate if it was skipped. First, The moon of Muharram is one of the holy months (Suci), along with three other months namely Dzul-Qa’dah, Dzul-Hijjah, and Rajab.

It is said to be a month of unlawful is because this month Allah exalts its glory and position compared to the other months. Read more about Law of Female Leads Prayer in Islam

This is one of the virtues that God sent down in the month of unlawfulness, that God will multiply the reward for those who do good deeds, do good deeds and God forbid this month to fight because it is a great sin.

As is mentioned in At-Taubah verse 9:

‘Indeed, the number of months with God is twelve [lunar] months in the register of God [from] the day He created the heavens and the earth; of these, four are sacred. That is the correct religion, so do not wrong yourselves in them. And fight against the disbelievers collectively as they fight against you collectively. And know that Allah is with the righteous [who fear Him].’

2. 10 Muharram (‘Ashura Day)

On the day of ‘Ashura or 10 Muharram. From Abu Hurairah Ra, Rasulullah SAW said:

Fasting the most afdhal (main) after (fasting) Ramadan is fasting month of Muharram and the most important prayer after prayer fardhu is night prayer’

And the more important fast in the month of Muharram is the fasting of ‘Ashura, the 10th of Muharram, as it implied in Hadith from Muslim no.1162

”Prophet SAW asked about the primacy of the fast of Arafah? He replied, “The fast of Arafah will take away sins a year ago & the year to come”. He was also asked about the privilege of fasting ‘Ashura? He replied, “Fasting ‘Ashura will wipe away sin a year ago”‘

On the same date, Allah saved Prophet Moses and his followers from the pursuit of the king of Pharaoh. Then they glorified the day by fasting. Before the coming of fasting obligations in Ramadan, the first obligatory fast is the fast of Muharram.

However, after the coming of fasting obligations of Ramadhan, fasting Muharram is being sunnah. The other advantages in the month of Muharram, especially date 10 are as follows: [AdSense-B]

  • It is the first month of the Hijri calendar
  • Heaven and Earth were made by Allah SWT on Ashura
  • On the day of Ashura also Allah created the prophet Adam and Siti Eve/Hawa
  • Allah created the angel Gabriel/Jibril on 10 Muharram
  • Allah created Heaven and put Adam’s prophet into Heaven on Ashura
  • Drowned the king of Pharaoh on the day of Ashura
  • Healed the prophet Ayyub from his illness
  • Receive the repentance of the prophet Adam on the day of Ashura
  • Forgiving the sin of Prophet David/Daood AS
  • Prophet Yunus was removed from the belly of the fish
  • God lifted Isa As. to the heavens
  • Prophet Ibrahim was saved from the fire by the king of Namrud

3. 12 Rabiul Awal (Mawlid of the Prophet)

The Prophet’s mawlid is the anniversary of the birth of Prophet Muhammad SAW, which is commemorated on the 12th of Rabi’ul Awwal. The word maulid or milad in Arabic means day of birth. The Birthday Celebration of the Prophet is a tradition that developed in the Islamic community long after the Prophet Muhammad SAW died. Read more about The Virtues of Salaam in Islam

[AdSense-A] The memorial of the Prophet’s mawlid was first performed by Sultan Salahuddin Al-Ayyubi. In his reminder he told of the history of his birth up to the struggle of the Prophet for his Ummah who should be a good model for his people.

The law of commemorating the mawlid of the Prophet is bid’ah hasanah whose purpose is nothing but to remind again how the story and his struggle for his people, imitate his praised morality, giving motivation to the Muslims to return the spirit in worship.

4. 27 Rajab (Isra’ Mi’raj)

Isra ‘Mi’raj is an event of the Prophet Muhammad’s journey from the Grand Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque to Sidratil Muntaha to accept the duty or obligation of the five previous prayers which is 50 time, on various policies in the end only the 5 day prayer that must be done in a day overnight. This isra ‘mi’raj incident occurred in one night. Isra ‘Mi’raj is commemorated on 27 Rajab.

Most people often combine Isra Mi’raj into a similar event. In fact, Isra and Mi’raj are two different events. In Isra, the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W was “dispatched” by Allah SWT from the Grand Mosque to the Aqsa Mosque. Then in Mi’raj Prophet Muhammad S.A.W was raised to the sky up to Sidratul Muntaha which is the highest place.

Isra ‘Mi’raj occurs in the final period of prophethood in Makkah before the Prophet emigrated to Medina. According to al-Mawdudi and the majority of scholars, Isra Mi’raj occurred in the first year before the hijra, which is between 620-621 AD.

According to al-Allamah al-Manshurfuri, Isra Mi’raj occurred on the night of Rajab’s twenty-seventh year, and this is popular.

5. 17 Ramadhan (Nuzulul Qur’an)

In this date, Moslem commemorate as Nuzulul Qur’an. Literally, Nuzulul Qur’an means the descent of the Qur’an (the holy book of Islam). This is written in Al-Baqarah verse 185 as follows:

‘The month of Ramadan [is that] in which was revealed the Qur’an, a guidance for the people and the clear proofs of guidance and criterion. So whoever sights [the new moon of] the month, let him fast it; and whoever is ill or on a journey – then an equal number of other days. Allah intends for you ease and does not intend for you hardship and [wants] for you to complete the period and to glorify God for that [to] which He has guided you; and perhaps you will be grateful.’

From the above verse, we can conclude that the month of Ramadan is the month in which Allah swt down the Qur’an to the Messenger of Allah that is used as a guide of mankind concerning rights and vanity. Read more about Importance of Aisha in Islam

In a hadith also explained, that in the month of Ramadan down also other prophetic books before the Prophet. Suhuf or sheets are passed down to each Prophet as well as from Baitul izzah to the world sky, that is through lailatul qadar.

This is as it is contained in the Hadith narrated by Imam Ahmad Ibnu Hambal and Abu Said from Imran Abu Awwan, from Qatadah of Abul Falih, from Abul Iswa, who said that:

‘The sheets of Prophet Ibrahim were revealed at the beginning of Ramadan, and the Torah was revealed on the sixth of Ramadan, and the Gospels were revealed on the thirteenth of Ramadan, while the Qur’an was revealed on the twenty-fourth of Ramadan.’

The scholars differ on the timing of nuzulul qur’an, this is because there is no official or underlying information about the exact time of Nuzulul Qur’an. There are narrated nuzulul qr’an occurred on the 17th of Ramadan, some say the 21st of ramadhan, and some are saying the 23rd and 24th.

Because it is so glorious the holy book of the Qur’an, the Muslims commemorate the night nuzulul qur’an commemorated from the 15th to the 24th, and usually there run it with the khatam (to finish read) al-qur’an own or a group there is also a warning him with lecture themed nuzulul qur’an.

And our belief so far about the night nuzulul qur’an happened on the 17th of Ramadan, it remains true.

Because on the 17th of Ramadan the first time the Prophet received the first verse of the verse of Surah Al-‘Alaq verses 1- 5, where at that time the Prophet was in the cave hira. Here is the verse:

‘Recite in the name of your Lord who created. Created man from a clinging substance. Recite, and your Lord is the most Generous. Who taught by the pen. Taught man that which he knew not.’

This feast is commemorated on the 10th of Dhul-Hijjah. Eid al-Adha is also called Idul Kurban. This feast day is the anniversary of the slaughter or sacrifice of Abraham’s son Ismail. However, the human sacrifice was replaced by an animal, the sheep.
