Law of Praying with Makeup for Women in Islam
Today, women and cosmetics are two things cannot be separated because it has already become the basic needs of women. In fact, for some women, they are willing to do anything in order to make her beautiful and good appearance.
There are many cosmetic products like mascara, lipstick, face powder, eyeliner, eye shadow etc. in addition, the social media is also colored with a beautiful women in their advertisements.

The Law of Grooming in Islam
Cosmetics phenomenon’s is getting flourishing, still, we need to see from Islam point of view:
يَا بَنِي آدَمَ خُذُوا زِينَتَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ مَسْجِدٍ وَكُلُوا وَاشْرَبُوا وَلا تُسْرِفُوا إِنَّهُ لا يُحِبُّ الْمُسْرِفِينَ
“Dear the son of Adam, put on your beautiful dress every (enter) at the mosque. Please eat and drink, but do not exaggerate. Indeed, Allah SWT dislikes those who are exaggerating things.” (QS. Al-A’raff 7:31)
The verse mentioned that Islam is permitted and encourage all women and men to do grooming as long as they are not excessive.

Here are some ways for grooming in Islam:
- Do not tabarruj
Tabarruj is from the word Al-Burj (star, the light thing, visible) that means exaggerate in exposing the jewelry and others beauty like neck, arms, calf and other body parts. As it is contradiction with the commandment of Allah SWT:
وَقَرْنَ فِي بُيُوتِكُنَّ وَلا تَبَرَّجْنَ تَبَرُّجَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ الأولَى
“And you shall stay remain at your house and do not groom and behave like the old ancient people.” (QS. Al-Ahzab, 33:33)
The habit of ancient people especially the women were wearing a perfume and anklet which will chime when she walked. This appearance will attract the men kind to look at her each time she walked due to the appearance of the women.
Thus, tabarruj in Islam is forbidden and women are not permitted to show her beauty too much except for her husband.

Do not show genitals
Genitals of women are covered the whole body except her face and tread palms. Therefore, she shall not show her genitals to others which are not her muhrim. As it is narrated in a hadidh:
الْمَرْأَةُ عَوْرَةٌ، فَإِذَا خَرَجَتِ اسْتَشْرَفَهَا الشَّيْطَانُ
“Women are like genitals, when she goes out (from her house), demons are always spying on her.” (HR. Tirmidzi)
Nevertheless, there are also limitations about showing her genitals into her mahram. There are some genitals allowed to be showed as it is become a habit inside the house like head, face, neck, arms, legs, calf and other body parts which are allowed to be wet (wudhu).
Likewise women, it is better to show the allowed genitals only for wudhu to be shown. In fact, some experts considered that the allowed genitals to be shown are from naval to knees.
Still, reconsider the phenomenon of LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender), it is recommended not to show too many genitals to the same gender in order to avoid unexpected incidents.

Do not grooming in a forbidden ways
There are some grooms which are forbidden to do in Islam, like:
- Tattoo, hair extension and tooth decay
“Allah SWT cursed the tattooed man and the woman requested to be tattooed, women who asked to have extension hair (with wig), shaving her eyebrows and the requested one, women who have tooth decay for her beauty which all changing of Allah SWT creation.” (HR. Bukhari and Muslim)
- Wearing perfume not for her husband
“Each woman who is wearing a perfume and she goes out passing through a group of human so they can smell the fragrant, then she is adulterer and each sight is also adulterer.” (Narrated by Ahmad, An-Nasaí and Al-Hakim from the street of Abu Musa Al-Asyári radhiyallahu ánhu)
- Looks like a man
“Rasulullah SAW cursed a man who resembles himself like a woman and a woman resembling herself like a man.” (Narrated Bukhari).
- Nail extension
There are five things of human natures: circumcision, shaving genitalia hair, cutting nails and pull the armpit hair.” (Tirmidzi).

Postulate Praying Wearing Makeup
There are various cosmetics in the market so that make women are more concern about the face treatment. The favorite cosmetic of the women is the waterproof type because it based on silicon-based oil and also lasting so it will not easily faded especially when we are attending special occasion.
To clean this type cosmetic, women must wear special cleanser like face tonic and milk cleanser.
How about the condition when the women are willing to pray and taking wudhu? Here, we are often seeing that most women are unwilling to erase her make up before wudhu. In fact, some are intentionally leaving the praying because they do not want to erase their make up even it is waterproof type.
Dr. Isnawati Rais MA, one of lecturers of Hadidh Science at Syariah Faculty, Islamic theologian, mentioned that the valid requirement of wudhu is when the water about the skin.
The doctor’s statement is supported by some of Rasulullah SAW relatives narrated that mentioned if the Prophet of Muhammad SAW seen a man was praying while his back foot shown a kind of light as big as dirham currency which is not wet (wudhu).
Rasulullah SAW then asked him to repeat again his wudhu and his praying. (HR. Abu Daud:175)

In summary, it can be said that it is allowed to women wearing makeup to wudhu, still, it would be better to erase her makeup first especially if the makeup is waterproof type, so that the water is about to her skin so it will be a perfect wudhu.
Yet, when she is wearing a waterproof makeup after she is done praying, her wudhu and praying are valid because the water is already cleaning her makeup perfectly until about to her skin.
It will not be problem as long as the type of the makeup used after wudhu is a type that is not contained filth. Please do make sure to concern about the composition of the ingredients of the makeup so we can avoid makeup which is categorized filth or forbidden.

As a suggestion, when we are organizing or attending a special occasion and you are unwilling to erase your makeup before taking wudhu, it would be better to held the event at the time which is not contradiction with prayer time or when the menstruation time so you will not leaving the prayer time or your prayer become invalid due to makeup only.
It would be better to priority our worship rather than makeup and be a beautiful woman in Islam.
